About Bucharest

Bucharest is the capital and largest city of Romania, located in the southeast of the country within the historical region of Wallachia. It is a major urban area and serves as the primary cultural, industrial, and financial center of Romania. The city is notable for its mix of architectural styles, from neoclassical and art nouveau to communist-era and modern buildings, and is often referred to as "Little Paris" for its elegant early 20th-century architecture and cultural life.

Basic information

Bucharest was first mentioned in documents in 1459. It became the capital of Romania in 1862. Key architectural features include the massive Palace of the Parliament, one of the largest administrative buildings in the world, and the historic Lipscani district with its cobblestone streets and old merchant houses. The city has numerous protected historical monuments and sites. Its current purpose is as the national administrative capital and a major European metropolitan hub.

Location

Bucharest is a major international transport hub. It is served by Henri Coandă International Airport, located approximately 16.5 kilometers north of the city center. The city is connected to other major European cities by road and rail networks. Internal transportation includes an extensive network of buses, trams, trolleybuses, and a metro system. Road conditions within the city are generally good. Tourist infrastructure is well-developed, with numerous hotels, information centers, and guided tours available. The city is accessible year-round, with no major seasonal limitations.

Nature

Bucharest is situated on the banks of the Dâmbovița River, on the Romanian Plain. The climate is humid continental, characterized by hot summers and cold, snowy winters. The landscape is predominantly urban, with significant human influence. Vegetation consists primarily of cultivated parks and gardens, such as Herăstrău Park and Cișmigiu Gardens, which provide green spaces. Natural wildlife is limited to common urban species like birds and small mammals. The original natural environment has been entirely transformed by urban development.

Story

Bucharest was founded by Vlad III (the Impaler) in the 15th century as a fortress. It became the capital of Wallachia in 1659. The city flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a period when its elegant architecture and cultural institutions were developed. It suffered significant damage during World War II and underwent major reconstruction. The communist era, particularly under Nicolae Ceaușescu, dramatically reshaped the city's center, including the construction of the Palace of the Parliament and the demolition of historic neighborhoods. Since the 1989 revolution, it has evolved into a modern European capital.
